Homemade Taco Seasoning: your answer to transforming leftovers
Being a SoCal native, I love my Mexican food. Sadly, most of it isn’t the healthiest so these days, I get my Mexican fix at home. Makes it much easier for me to ditch my beloved rice and beans…I (fortunately) can’t make proper refried beans, so I don’t try! Temptation gone. Years ago I realized that we were using those taco seasoning packets way too often and figured it couldn’t be hard to make. Well, it isn’t! Since we always have it on hand, stored in a jar with the recipe written on top, we transform just about every leftover protein into a taco. Random leftover chicken, pork tenderloin, turkey, beef…I even used it with the meat left after making Bone Broth (pictured)! Last time we went out of town and stayed in a condo on the beach, I brought our jar of taco seasoning just in case we needed a quick taco dinner. That’s the beauty of tacos – they are fast!
Taco Seasoning
- 1 T chili powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 tsp Mexican oregano
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 T cumin
- 1 tsp salt
Make a double or triple batch to keep on hand. If you like, you can add a few Tablespoons of tomato paste and splash of water plus your taco seasoning to get a thicker “sauce”. You can cook the meat with some fresh diced tomatoes in lieu of tomato paste – that’s what I did with the Bone Broth meat. For 1 pound of meat, use 2 Tablespoons of Seasoning and adjust to your taste. Use this seasoning to make a Fish Tacos in minutes!
